THE IMPACTS OF INTERNATIONAL MIGRATION ON TURKISH EXPORT: EXTENDED GRAVITY MODEL APPLICATION (2008-2016)

Abstract

In this study, the impacts of international migration on exports from Turkey to OECD countries were examined within the gravity model framework. The study analyzed the effects of Turkish emigrants in OECD countries and of foreign immigrants from OECD countries in Turkey on Turkish exports. In this way, the research attempted to determine the type of migrant that affects Turkish exports. The “Migrant Stock” data, which is often used in migration studies, was used as a migration variable in the analysis of the study. The panel data analysis findings based on the gravity model covering the period 2008-2016 indicate that Turkish emigrants in the partner country do not affect Turkish exports statistically significantly. The study results also show that foreign immigrants belonging to the partner country in Turkey positively affect Turkish exports.
