ANALYSIS OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT AND ECONOMIC GROWTH: THE CASE OF TURKEY

Abstract

Direct foreign investment has played critical role emerging economies. These investments of
contributes significant to the process of capital formation by supporting the host conutry’s resources.
The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship of foreign direct investment and economic growth
in Turkey. VAR analysis method has been used for this purpose. The study focused on the period 1980-
2013. In this study, it was used foreign direct investment as the dependent variable; inflation rate,
gross domestic product, the share in gross domestic product of loans granted to the private sector and
secondary education enrollment rate as independent variable. As a result, it was found to be causality
in the short term between direct foreign investment, inflation and loans granted to the private sector.
In the long term there is a causal relationship between foreign direct investment, gross domestic
product, loans granted to the private sector and secondary education enrollment rate.

DOĞRUDAN YABANCI SERMAYE YATIRIMLARI VE EKONOMİK BÜYÜME İLİŞKİSİNİN ANALİZİ: TÜRKİYE ÖRNEĞİ

Abstract

Doğrudan yabancı sermaye yatırımları, gelişmekte olan ekonomiler için kritik bir rol
oynamaktadır. Bu yatırımlar ev sahibi ülkenin kaynaklarını destekleyerek sermaye oluşum sürecine
önemli katkıda bulunmaktadırlar. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türkiye’de doğrudan yabancı sermaye
yatırımları ve ekonomik büyüme ilişkisinin analiz edilmesidir. Bu amaç doğrultusunda VAR analizi
yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada 1980-2013 dönemi ele alınmıştır. Çalışmada bağımlı değişken
olarak doğrudan yabancı sermaye yatırımları, bağımsız değişken olarak da enflasyon oranı, gayri safi
yurt içi hâsıla, özel sektöre kullandırılan kredilerin GSYH içindeki payı ve ortaöğretimde okullaşma
oranı kullanılmıştır. Sonuç olarak, doğrudan yabancı sermaye yatırımları, enflasyon ve özel sektöre
kullandırılan krediler arasında kısa dönemde nedensellik ilişkisi olduğu görülmüştür. Uzun dönemde
ise, doğrudan yabancı sermaye yatırımları, gayri safi yurt içi hâsıla, özel sektöre kullandırılan kredi
ve orta öğretimde okullaşma arasında nedensellik ilişkisi bulunmaktadır.
