The Impact of Innovation on Youth Unemployment: The Case of NUTS II Regions inTurkey

Öz

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of innovation on youth unemployment in NUTS2 regions of Turkey in 2004-2017. A significant relationship was found between innovation and youth unemployment in the long term of Panel ARDL analysis. According to the long run findings, while innovation and per capita income have a decreasing effect on youth unemployment, the population has an increasing effect on youth unemployment. According to the short run findings, innovation and population do not have a significant effect on youth unemployment and per capita income has a decreasing effect on youth unemployment. PMG short run regional estimates show that the impact of innovation on youth unemployment varies across regions.

Öz

Bu araştırmanın amacı, 2004-2017 döneminde Türkiye’de düzey II bölgeleri için inovasyonun genç işsizlik üzerindeki etkisini incelemektir. Panel ARDL yöntemi ile yapılan analizin bulgusunda inovasyon ile genç işsizlik arasında uzun dönemde anlamlı bir ilişki tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca analiz bulgularına göre inovasyonun ve kişi başı düşen gelirin uzun dönemde genç işsizlik üzerinde azaltıcı etkisi var iken, nüfusun uzun dönemde genç işsizlik üzerinde artırıcı etkisi vardır. Kısa dönem analiz bulgularına göre ise inovasyonun ve nüfusun kısa dönemde genç işsizlik üzerinde anlamlı bir etkiye sahip değildir ve kişi başına düşen gelirin kısa dönemde genç işsizlik üzerindeki azaltıcı etkisi vardır. PMG kısa dönem bölgesel tahminleri inovasyonun genç işsizlik üzerindeki etkisinin bölgeler arasında farklılaştığını göstermektedir.
