The Problem of Machiavelli's Machiavellianism: Method, Human Nature and Violence in Machiavelli's Thought

Abstract

Niccolò Machiavelli is not only recognized as the founder of modern politics but also one of the most prolific thinkers of the modern period. This article proposes to reinterpret the thought of Machiavelli (1469-1527), one of the leading figures of modern political thought. This attempt at reinterpretation suggests that Machiavelli's political thought is more complex than is generally recognized. Therefore, the aim of the article is to distinguish Machiavelli's thought from the “Machiavellianism” attributed to him and to contribute to the evaluation of his thought in its own unique position. In order to show that the image of Machiavelli (Machiavellianism) and Machiavellian thought do not exactly intersect, the article focuses on a few concepts that are central to Machiavellian thought: Method, human nature, beginnings and violence. These concepts are also constitutive in the formation of the image of Machiavellianism. A proper analysis of the method, human nature and beginnings in Machiavellian thought will show that the two (the image of Machiavelli and Machiavellian thought) are not entirely unrelated, but neither are they identical. This can have two benefits: First, to suggest that there are other ways of interpreting a thinker like Machiavelli, who is almost caricatured by a huge discursive load. Second, to suggest the hypothesis that if Machiavelli is identified with modern politics, then changing how we think about him will change how we think about modern politics. Thus, the words of the Italian philosopher Benedetto Croce, one of the most important 20th-century interpreters of Machiavelli, will serve as a guiding principle in Machiavelli studies: “A question that can never be solved: The question of Machiavelli.”
