The Effect of Perceived Coworkers’ Support on Overall Job Performance: A Study on Medical Secretaries
Abstract
It is a proven fact that employee performance will affect job performance in today's working life. For this reason, the ‘human’ resource is considered as a factor of production of increasing importance in organizations. A person who is a social being communicates with his coworkers in formal and informal forms in organizational life. The support of coworkers in both communication channels is a form of behavior necessary to achieve organizational goals. The requirements for friendship relationships based on trust, love, respect and support in social life are felt similarly in business life. Coworkers' support, which is perceived as a positive emotion, will affect the employee's commitment to work and job satisfaction by reflecting on the employee's job. In this way, work performance will increase and efficiency will be provided from the work performed. In this context, in the research carried out, it was aimed to measure the role of coworker support in overall job performance at the workplace. The data collected from the medical secretaries working in a public institution by the survey method were analyzed by means of SPSS. The findings obtained confirm the hypothesis that the support of coworkers positively affects the overall job performance. A positive correlation has been revealed in the relationship between the support of coworkers of medical secretaries and overall job performance. When the effect of this relationship was examined, it was determined that the increase of 1 unit in the support of coworkers led to a positive increase in overall job performance of 196 (1.96%). It is hoped that the result revealed by this study will contribute to the organizational behavior literature.
